Commercial photography FAQ

Straight answers before you book.

These answers cover the usual process. Your written quote and photography agreement confirm the scope, timing, costs and licence for your specific project.

Booking & scope

What should I send with an enquiry?

Send the business name, location, preferred timing, current website or listing, where the photographs will be used and what needs to be clearer after the shoot. You do not need to arrive with a finished brief.

How is a commercial photography shoot quoted?

Every quote follows the actual scope: the outcome, time on site, locations, people or products involved, travel, deliverables and intended usage. You receive a clear written scope and fee before deciding whether to book.

How do I secure a shoot date?

A date is confirmed once the project scope is agreed and the 30% deposit is received. The remaining balance is due before the final photographs are delivered.

Do I need to prepare a shot list?

No. Start with the outcome and any must-have or must-avoid photographs. Kerosene can turn that into a practical shot plan covering the people, spaces, process, details and formats the business needs.

Where do you work, and is travel charged?

Kerosene is based near Christchurch and works throughout Canterbury and the South Island. Travel and project expenses are quoted or itemised before booking, so there are no vague travel costs afterwards.

Can you work with an agency, designer or marketing team?

Yes. Kerosene works directly with business owners and alongside agencies, web designers and in-house teams. Approval steps, file requirements, usage and delivery specifications are agreed before the shoot.

Planning & shoot day

Can you work around live service or an active worksite?

Yes. Access, timing, safety and the must-have moments are planned first. The shoot then works around the real operation with minimal disruption, whether that is restaurant service, a guest property, a workshop or an active site.

How much direction do you give?

Enough to make the photograph clear and useful. People may move into better light, repeat part of a process or adjust a space, but the work stays grounded in what the business genuinely does.

What needs to be ready before the shoot?

The location needs to be accessible and shoot-ready, and the relevant people, products or spaces need to be available. Hospitality clients should confirm dishes and service windows; accommodation should be guest-ready; worksites need access, inductions and PPE arranged; product clients should have every required variant on hand.

Who handles permissions and people appearing in the photographs?

The client arranges location access and makes sure staff or participants know they may be photographed. If formal model, property or guardian releases are needed, request them before shoot day and Kerosene can provide suitable templates.

What happens if weather affects the shoot?

If weather makes the agreed outcome unrealistic or unsafe, either party can request a reschedule and the deposit transfers once. Where the client chooses to proceed in poor conditions, the likely effect on the photographs is discussed first.

What if we need to reschedule or cancel?

With more than seven days’ notice, the deposit can transfer once to an available date within 60 days. At seven days or less, the deposit is normally forfeited unless the date is rebooked. Deposits are non-refundable on cancellation, and committed costs may also apply within 48 hours.

Delivery, editing & usage

How long does delivery take?

Standard turnaround is 10 business days from the shoot, or from the final day of a multi-day project. A 3–5 business day rush may be available depending on the schedule and is quoted separately.

What do clients receive?

Clients receive a curated set of edited final photographs through an organised download link or gallery. Delivery links remain active for 30 days, so the final files should be downloaded and backed up promptly.

What editing and revisions are included?

Colour correction and Kerosene’s standard commercial grade are included. One round of reasonable tweaks is included when requested within seven days of delivery. Heavy retouching, compositing, major object removal or further revisions are charged at NZD $150 per hour or quoted separately.

Do you provide RAW files?

RAW files are not standard deliverables. They are only considered for approved platform, agency or internal post-production workflows where a documented operational hand-off is required.

What usage is included?

After full payment, the standard commercial licence covers the client’s own website, social media, email marketing, in-house print, menus, listing platforms, proposals and PR. It also includes paid digital advertising up to NZD $5,000 in total media spend per campaign or 90-day period. Larger campaigns, broadcast, out-of-home and independent third-party use need a separate licence.

Can our agency, venue or partner use the photographs?

A contracted agency or website administrator can use the files solely to market the client’s business. Platforms, venues and publications can receive them for that same purpose. A partner using the photographs to advertise its own business needs permission or a separate licence.

Who owns copyright, and is credit required?

Kerosene retains copyright and grants the agreed commercial usage licence after full payment. A credit to Federico Corradi or Kerosene Media is appreciated but is not required.

Can the project remain confidential?

Yes. Options include delayed sharing, avoiding identifiable faces or sensitive details, or a full portfolio opt-out. A full confidential opt-out carries an additional 10% fee because Kerosene cannot use the work for its own portfolio.
